Was Buddha Just a Nice Guy?

Dr. Dean Radin, chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, is interested in the far reaches of consciousness research – what does a mystical experience mean? How does it work? And what does it say about the nature of reality? We can use the tools of science to study psychic and mystical experience.

The prevailing understanding in the neurosciences today is that consciousness is generated by the brain, which gives rise to the concept that the brain is basically a mechanism, like a robot or a computer, but you can’t find consciousness within that structure.

Another approach is that brain activity reflects consciousness. The experience of meditation shows that consciousness seems to be everywhere and is outside us and the brain is receiving consciousness. Where is the observer?

The third possibility involves subtle energies, which we have difficulty detecting with our conventional equipment yet are widely experienced and can be studied in the laboratory.
